My mom always told me that if you really want something done, “you have to do it yourself”. No where is this more true than in the world of SEO, where there is so much one can do to promote a website or blog. The principle also applies SEO’s new best friend, social media. Social media has a large platform so that you can market your website or blog in a number of different ways. For a start, social media marketing allows you to promote your site or business through social media channels. It’s a powerful strategy that will get you links, attention and massive amounts of traffic. In my opinion, there are several methods that you can use to optimise social media from the comfort of your PC.

First things first, you need to research social media platforms and decide which one you are going to use.Once that’s done, you need to create a profile such as those on FaceBook, MySpace, or LinkedIn. Play with that for a while and then start contributing to the community by commenting and sharing information, making friends, engaging those around you. Leave comments on blogs, listen to podcasts, take part in polls, search the web for information on social media and read books on the subject. Ask questions of people or organisations that are using social media. You need to determine what you’re going to use the platform for, and distinguish yourself from users who are only in it for fun.

It’s always a good idea to keep track of what you are doing, your statistics that is. Social media circles have many ways of doing this; a good example is Technorati, which allows you to claim your blog. This will ensure you are indexed in their search engines for blogs, and that when they broadcast blog updates across their network, your blog will be included with all the others. Subscribing to feeds, and using iGoogle, My Yahoo Web or other favoured RSS readers is another way to monitor your content and also watch for changes.

What are friends for? You might have hundreds of friends online but are they really your friends? You need friends with social media muscle; they are the one’s that can make a difference to your site. These “powerful friends” can really give you credit and in a way endorse your article (blog/content). This can attract many readers to your blog. And if you provide valuable content, they may decide to subscribe to it, which will increase your visibility and credibility online. This will result in even more visitors, subscribers, links, and opportunities. Try this and see how it goes! Good luck.
