The future is an unpredictable element of everyday life, attempting to predict it is nearly impossible. The same goes for trying to predict the future of an industry such as SEO. There are, however, ways in which to gauge the direction in which it is headed by observing where it started, its current position, and the expectations it has for the near future. SEO is still a relatively new industry (considering that it has been in the public eye for less than 10 years), and it’s more than likely that there are still some undiscovered areas of search engine marketing that exist.

SEO has gone through a few hiccups in its time (for example, the unsettling ‘Florida’ update) and as Searchandgo.com states, “SEO is unlikely ever to be an exact science since the techniques used to promote web pages are constantly evolving as the search engines refine their algorithms to deliver more accurate results whilst combating spam”. So, in a way SEO can be defined as a constantly evolving industry that will continue to offer new solutions in the years to come.

There are endless opportunities for SEO as an industry to evolve alongside the advances that Google makes to its algorithm, which are like ever-changing theorems that they apply to their database system. It is vital for a website to mould their site, from both the front and back end, around these specific theorems, and to change with them over time.

The emerging technologies of the Internet world provide a very positive view of what lies ahead, especially with the internet expanding its reaches across cell phones, PDAs, etc. And along with widespread internet access, comes stronger competition on the search engines. The possibilities that now exist for people to gain access to the internet have grown significantly in the last 5 years, which makes you wonder when the next big online advance will come about. Will we soon be able to access the internet through our microwaves?

Search Engine Optimisation will constantly adjust itself and seek out more trustworthy and significant search results to be displayed on the various platforms. And we hope that as the search engines refine their processes, the opportunities to create a successful marketing campaign through the use of ‘black hat’ tactics (algorithm exploitation) will gradually disappear.
