Women are consumers too

Posted by Sandra Cosser on 19 Mar 2008 | Tagged as: Hot off the Press, SEO Strategy

Not only are women consumers, they are intelligent consumers. Their brains are wired differently to men, and they think and process information differently. Very few marketers, online and off, recognise this and tailor their campaigns to suit women, or create campaigns that are gender neutral.

Think of all of the adverts out there, especially for cars and beer. Do any of them really take female consumption into account? As a woman, I’m going to go with No.

Is virtual blight tarnishing your online community?

Posted by Sandra Cosser on 27 Feb 2008 | Tagged as: Hot off the Press, Online PR

No one likes to see his or her neighbourhood decline as bad influences move in and disrupt established living conditions. No one likes to see the rules of social etiquette breached to such a degree that those of good standing feel compelled to relocate to a more civil and welcoming environment. We don’t tolerate malicious and inconsiderate behaviour in the real world; it then stands to reason that we won’t tolerate it in the virtual world either.

This is no longer “new” news, but it is big news, and if it does go through, it will have huge implications on the search world. Microsoft’s bid would be one of the largest technology mergers the world has ever seen and would thus present important issues regarding the competitive landscape of the internet.

As Danny Sullivan mentions in his post on Search Engine Land on Friday, Microsoft is to bid $31 per share to Yahoo!’s board of directors to purchase the company, offering a deal that is potentially worth $45 billion.

Wikipedia has become one of the largest and most frequently used information sources on the Internet. More often than not, when typing in keywords for your search, Google comes up with a Wikipedia option near the top of the list. One of the features that makes Wikipedia unique in the world of search, and one of the reasons that it’s so popular, is the fact that articles can be edited and have information added by anyone interested in doing so.

Google Webmaster Tools has officially launched a new tool that helps us better control the country- association of our content. The information you will be giving Google will help determine how youyour site appears in country-specific search results, which in turn will also improve the search results for specific geographic queries.

Amanda Camp, engineer with Webmaster Tools, claims that although Google does its best to determine the location of sites and rank them appropriately, it sometimes leads to problems. There have been plenty of concerns from webmasters, and Google has been working hard to come up with a solution to make life easier for them, while safeguarding searchers as well.

YouTube targets piracy

YouTube released a Video Identification tool last week. This move will help kerb the increasing piracy issues that YouTube faces on a regular basis. Finally, a concrete policy on Video piracy is in the pipelines.

According to Dan King from YouTube:

The system works by creating a database full of abstract images of copyrighted videos that are then matched with videos that are uploaded to YouTube.

YouTube is currently working with Google to filter its technology of identifying the ownership of videos uploaded in YouTube. They are giving video content owners the ability to manage their videos, and the choice on what to do with these Videos once they have been properly identified.

Media for the eyes and ears

Most text media, in fact most media in general, which is uploaded to the web, is tagged with metadata. This is so that it can be found easily on traditional search engines. But more and more innovative and creative companies are looking at new ways of uploading and searching for data in order to more fully involve all the senses. They want to make the way in which we search on the net seem more like the way in which we sort through and assimilate the world around us.

MVISearch has just formed a new joint venture with employersjobs.com to address the fact that most blue chip companies are not effectively using search to improve their direct recruitment strategy. With agency recruitment fees spiraling there has never be a better time to harness the power of search to reduce cost per hire and promote your employer brand awareness.

However firstly it’s a good idea to cover the basics.

What is HR-SEO?
HR-SEO is the art of making sure your direct recruitment website or campaign site is at the top of all search engines for all job titles in all locations. The result is effectively removing the over reliance on job boards and harnessing the traffic generation power of search.
