It’s no easy task to master and could take years and years. The search landscape is extremely dynamic, so if you don’t have passion, determination and a thirst for knowledge, there is no way you will ever reach the pinnacle of success.

Hard work is a given, high energy is a prerequisite. If you have all of the above and adequate resources and relationships to support your endeavour, there is no reason why you shouldn’t succeed.

According to Adam, the challenge is in getting clients to adopt SEO when they have never heard of it, don’t believe it is “really that important right now” (typically heard from startups), or still believe SEO is spamming.

There are a few key directions that you can take in order to achieve success as an SEO Guru. The main factors include knowledge, research, high energy, faith and relationship building.

Knowledge is the most important factor, as experience and research is invaluable. Clients want to see proven successes and want to know that they can trust you to deliver what you promise to. It’s very important that you keep abreast of industry changes, especially Google algorithm changes. That’s just as important as researching and understanding your client’s industry. You have to ensure that you have the skills to target SEO in their sector effectively and efficiently with a precise plan of action.

The prerequisite of “high energy” is another key factor, as people will knock you down and challenge you regularly. You can’t let it get you down, and you need to bounce back with more gusto than you started., Moreover, understanding and patience is crucial, and as a byproduct, your interpersonal skills will flourish. Never get into silly, menial arguments about why SEO is important, rather set an example by showing “why” it’s important and how your “challenger” can benefit from adopting it.

Keep the faith alive within yourself. If you believe it works and are as passionate about SEO as you say you are, show it! If you ever want to achieve Guru Status, you have to fight for your belief, if you do that, others will follow.

That brings me to my final point: people power. Your relationships with clients are like liquid gold. People buy from people and not from companies. Build, nurture and maintain these relationships at each step of the process. Adam suggests that you start developing casual relationships with everyone you meet.

Spread the word, keep in constant contact and keep building those relationships to a point that everyone you know understands SEO and why it’s so important. Word of mouth spreads fast, and even if Joe Soap can’t do it right now, his friend Mike may be interested in implementing SEO into his online business. You never know, and you really can’t judge a book by its cover. People will surprise you.

With all these pieces in place, you are instantly at an advantage and therefore, well on your way to greatness. Keep at it, do the hard work, keep building and maintaining relationships, keep the energy alive and never stop learning. And whatever you do, don’t forget to spread the good word!
