Google Analytics development began after Google acquired Urchin three years ago. The popularity of which has since soared beyond that of a mere supplementary side-service.

WebProNews reports a study by Pingdom that indicates that 32 percent out of the Alexa global top five hundred performing websites on the internet use Google Analytics to monitor their web stats.

Somewhere along the line, Google worked out that if they offer their powerful analytics reporting software for free, website owners everywhere would grab at the opportunity, subsequently offering up their valuable web statistics to Google to do with whatever they please. An immediate resulting benefit for Google is that many commercial website owners are signing up for AdWords.

The more we common folk become used to the luxurious pampering we receive from the internet giant, the faster into the hands of fate we accelerate. So far, Google has fit the role of a maternal figure, smothering our every need, as we look to them for guidance and favour. It has been a give and take relationship, as they have undoubtedly used this data to their commercial benefit.

I feel that corruption will ultimately befall all who come upon such absolute power, the abuse of which is inevitable. As Google has access to intimate data from such a large segment of the web, and soon the mobile market, they have more leverage in the respect of advertising. The rise to dictatorship can be measured as a sequence of political successes, exponential in nature, which Google happen to have had in abundance, across their lifespan.

As their commercial success flounces gradually forward, the market space for competitors falls proportionally away. It‘s a hugely ironic “catch twenty-two” scenario, where our reliance on a good service contributes to its end. By this presumptuous implication I mean that, once Google no longer need to compete for our patronage, they may happily throw their feet atop their desk, light a victory cigar, tell their secretary to hold all call’s, telephone the wife to postpone the dinner arrangement and rest assured in the knowledge of their invincible security.

From a contrasting perspective, Google have rarely shown signs of impartiality and unfairness toward their consumers. So far their style has been nothing but to improve user experience. The Google model is testament to the betterment of information organisation on the whole. Let’s pray that things stay that way in the coming years.
